North Wilkes Football HC

North Wilkes hired a pretty solid name down from the beach to the take the job.. don't know if he will work in Hays considering the talent's much different but this guy had several 10 win years. That number won't happen in Hays but if he gets this group they are gonna have the next couple of years to 5-6 wins he will be doing good. These returning kids especially the rising 11th graders were quite awful on JV in 2018 with low numbers and not much talent; plus there are only 10 seniors with not much playing time he has his job cut out for him.

It doesn't matter if it's a scrimmage or not.. when you claim to be a frontrunner of a conference and Atkins outscores you by 10 points it's an embarrassment. The fact they beat North Forsyth the next week blows my mind still.. shoulda never happened but Monty got lucky. He won't have that kind of luck up in VA if he coaches like he has the past few years. He's gotta develop defenses.

Gregory's probably the best internal option. Outside there's plenty of people.. Johnson for sure if he wants to live that far away from his family in Surry County. David Hunt's still at Wilkes Central and would fit in okay. I see there being a nice number of people applying for it honestly.. it isn't 2009 anymore they can't afford to be overly thirsty and pick any person who swims upstream like they did with Maxwell who nuked the program. They will have a nice group apply.

This hire may be their most important pick they have ever had.. they have had consistent long term success but in order to maintain it they gotta get the right guy. If they fail then the whole program falls to dumpster level again. Much like in the 90's they picked their wrestling coach to head things and it fell apart and hard very fast. Can't afford to fail.

At this point in the year I wouldn't be shocked if David Gregory gets it.

SO who is leading candidate here?

Well after some searching Red Hoffman is winningest I'd say. Chipman has to be top 5 though.

I might be wrong but I wouldn't be shocked if he's the winningest coach in Wilkes County history.

He was at least one of the most consistent probably.

What does retiring and going to a other state have to do with being straight up? Heck I'd do it.

A scrimmage??? We talking about a Scrimmage ?? LOL!!!!

Yeah true.. it's something he would do as he's not the most straight up dude.

I guess he seen writing on the wall once Atkins humiliated them at that scrimmage last year.. even if they went 7-4 it's hard to recover from Atkins outscoring you by 10. The fact he got them to 7-4 honestly was an accomplishment.. I was surprised he didn't get coach of the year honestly. He had that senior group but the kids behind them are a big drop.. they only beat East on JV 2 years ago.
Gonna be a rough year or two for who gets the job.. then maybe they will get back up. It can be done in Hays, he showed it.

Really not an uncommon move. Retire in NC. Draw your retirement and go make bank in Virginia or South Carolina. Tons of coaches do it.

My understanding is he is retiring from North Carolina.

Deana King on NC Preps posted that Monty Chipman's resigned at North WIlkes to go to Carroll County Virginia.. Didn't say if he's their new HC or what but wow what a random move.

Guess he knew the talent would be down so he got out of dodge.. tough for those kids though. Whoever's gonna get it is going to have do a serious rebuilding job the next few years.
