Free Last Minute Tax Help

Public Event

Saturday, Apr. 14, 2018
Northwestern Regional Libraries

The Northwestern Regional Library is offering free, last minute tax help at Alleghany, Boonville, East Bend, Elkin, and Yadkin County public libraries. The service is courtesy of the IRS’ Northwest North Carolina Community VITA Tax Link Coalition. The Coalition provides free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. IRS-certified volunteers are on hand to inform taxpayers about tax credits for which they may qualify, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly.

Assistance is available for anyone whose incomes are $54,000 or less to prepare their federal income tax returns and provide free electronic filing.

Taxpayers seeking assistance must have photo identification and Social Security Cards for themselves, spouses, and dependents. They should also bring wage and earnings statements (Forms W-2), interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s return, and any other information concerning their income and expenses for 2017. For joint e-filed returns, both spouses must be present to sign the required tax forms.

VITA site hours are by appointment only. Call to schedule your appointment.

In addition, the Northwestern Regional Library in partnership with the United Way and powered by H&R Block provides MyFreeTaxes.com (https://www.unitedwa...yfreetaxes). The site will be available through the Northwestern Regional Library website (http://www.nwrl.org) free of charge. MyFreeTaxes provides online filing for federal and state returns to qualifying filers both individuals and families with household incomes of $66,000 or less in 2017. The online tool allows taxpayers to self-file for free using a simple step-by-step process that includes free phone, email, and online chat support from IRS-certified specialists.

Residents may also be eligible for up to $6,318 from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Four of five eligible workers claim and get their EITC. We want to raise that number to five out of five. You earned it, “now file, claim it and get it.” See if you qualify at http://www.irs.gov/eitc.

If you have any questions, please contact your local library or log onto http://www.nwrl.org.
