If they don't know how to dribble, pass and shoot by the time they get to High Shool then they shouldn't be playing basketball. I don't know the coach and I've not seen them play but I would hope they know the fundamentals before trying out for the team

wow, has anyone seen his coaching skill. have watched starmount games for years and have never seen anything like it. if i remember correctly he stated in the elkin paper that he is building a team that can not be beat. the girls have already gave up. 40-50 points a game is the average they lose by. down by 30 and he still not smart enough to not press or they still not know how to pass a basketball or rebound or anything. from what i hear from the girls he never works on skill improvement drills. its nothing but hearing him talk and run plays. heck you have to be able to dribble and shoot and pass and play defense before you start running plays. i heard one of the girls last night say they never work on shooting skills or dribbling skills its just listen to him and do yoga crap. i know nobody else would want to inherit that program but between him and the ex middle school know it all they had, starmount ad and staff should see they need to make a change. what a shame. feel sorry for the girls, it looks like what they learned in middle school is about all they ever going to learn. i know i will try and convince my daughter to play volleyball. at least they have a coach that can teach.

It is not that the girls where not putting in work over the summer, the point of the whole thing is that in order to make the team you do not have to go to summer workouts, it is illegal to even have summer workouts. You can not say that the reason that these girls did not make the team is because they were not good enough because that is not the reason, if you have ever went and watched one of their games then you would see that they need all the help that they can get. I am telling you that it will not be too much longer and that coach will be gone, the things that he is doing is going to land him in the unemployment line and possibly jail.

It really couldn't have been mandatory if they didn't go, lol. Perhaps it's just a lot harder to compete with kids that do put in the hours of practice. I guess my question is if it's important to the kid, then why wouldn't they put the practice hours in, mandatory or not?

I'll believe that you;ll find that mandatory workouts beyond the proscribed "season" are a direct violation of the NCHSAA rules and regulations. If there is hard evidence that this occurred then a student or parent should drop a dime on the coach with the state and cook his goose.
If the girls were cut from the team because they were out of shape, or did not know the "system" because they did not put in the off season work, it is all on them.
Like it or not, high school athletics has become a serious commitment for the students, we the public hold the coaches responsible for the actions and behaviors of 15 - 18 year old kids, when the teams don't win. Very few kids have the athletic ability to compete at the highest level and fewer still have the discipline to hone their ability to the point they are able to compete at even the highest levels of secondary level sports.

Wonder why they didn't go to summer workouts if he made it mandatory? Doesn't that mean that they have to go in order to play?

From my understanding a bunch of girls were cut from the team for not going to summer practices and workout which he made mandatory? Also hear one of the girls on the team he has a fancy for, seems she gets to do what she wants to and nothing is done to her. I think we will have another one in the paper soon.
