Some fine Christian folk telling people they are going to hades and other disgusting behavior.

I haven't read all of the replies, so I'm sorry if this has already been said.

But it turns out that the bench was actually placed on top of someone else's memorial!!!

http://www.12403wc.com/home...versy.html

Now that's just rude.

But realistically, we're talking about a metal bench, sitting in full sun. It shouldn't surprise anyone that metal can get pretty hot, so who would be liable if a baby or elderly person sat on the bench and got severely burned?

I'm sorry to the parents that lost the baby. It really is sad, and the memorial was a sweet idea. It's just that no one put any thought at all in to the memorial or where it should go, so they have no right to be so angry about it.

Then bench was removed and everyone screamed because of the bible verse, I've not heard the group that placed it there apologize for not following the rules and making the City look bad in the process. Probably won't hear it either.

STOP GETTING BUTT HURT EVERY TIME YOUR WORLD VIEW OR BELIEF SYSTEM IS CHALLENGED.

Whom ever placed it, should have gotten the appropriate town official to sign off on it. As for the Bible verse, big whoop. I'm an agnostic and I see religious icons daily without getting my Fruit of the Looms twisted in a knot. The city didn't use public funds to purchase, or place, the bench. As for the question, "what if it were a Koran quote?" Or .... "What if the Satanic Church wanted to place a memorial?" My response is that if they follow appropriate steps for approval, have at it. If I'm not mistaken, there is a Satanic memorial in Detroit, no one's head imploded and brimstone failed to rain from the sky.

Me n' Cooter's gone go put a toilet over to tha' park. Well, it hain't really a toilet. It used to be, but me an Cooter turnt it into a grill last winter. We can take tha' van by on Sundays and tailgate with tha' door open before the footballs game. It'll be a Sunday tradition. We won't need approval neither, cause we hain't even gone have a Bible verse on our Toilet Grill. Hit's gone be covered with Dallas Cowboys Paraphernalia. That's why this Country his great. I love tha' freedom to do whatever I whont when I whont. Don't chall try to get all PC on me an' tell me I cain't neither. I know my rights. I gots tha' right to do anything I whont and complain about peeple bein' PC and violatin' my rhights if'n they don't see eye to eye with what hit his I whont.

Before ya'll get all aggeravated, I jus' whont yall to know that the toilet is for my Diddy an' Mee-Maw. Diddy was a big Cowboys fan and we halways enjoyed the Sunday games and Me-Maw's Grilled Taco Sunday. My toilet-grill at tha' park will be for him and Mee-Maw hand I shouldn't have to git' no 'proval from nobody neither. Memorials is special and my diddy was special and my Me-Maw was special and I'll not have they memory trampled under foot by some PC, Grilled-Taco Sunday and Dallas Cowdoys hatin' hatemongers intent on ruinin' it and violatin' my god-given rights.

P.S. My buddy Darrell's puttin' a morial out for his mom too. She was one of them exortic dancers. She died of crotch rott last year, rest her soul. We gone put a pole up by tha' swing sets soon as we can find a welder to weld some fence posts together. (sigh)...'Merica.

Daddy P (view profile)

I'm not worried about me getting hurt or really even anyone else getting hurt. I am just trying to look at why there is an approval process. People are sue happy and the county/town knows this.

Thank you for reminding me why I don't give my opinion on here more often anymore. One post stating my view of what may have been a reason for not allowing the bench...and I get called a name.
Oh, don't pay any attention to that. You made perfect sense. There are a few around here that like to try and start a ruckus with others just for their own entertainment.

it's no skin off my nose either way but...
they don't just set anything in parks anymore,it's gotta be mounted/bolted to something solid.
even trash can's and their lids are chained down.
and if they let this family just put it there(looked like a nice bench to me)
the problem starts when everyone else starts putting up memorials.well here comes jimbob and marybob putting up a memorial for jimbob jr and it turns out to be his grandpaw (grandpawbob's)
1978 ford econoline van...things just go down hill from there

Are you serious?

I think that is a great idea to have them put the bench somewhere on their own property where they'd be able to see it everyday. Maybe make a pretty flower garden around it.

I do not think it should be approved to be put at the public park. It will set a precedent the town will have to follow for everyone to keep it fair. They should have called the town, asked about the procedures it takes to have a bench placed, then followed them.

Looking at the pictures online it looks like they plopped it down in the middle of a flower bed. I saw plants all around and underneath the bench. So it was also not a very ideal location either.

Do you have seat belts installed on your toilet to keep you from falling off.
You sound like a real ****.

To me the issue has nothing to do with what is written on the bench. I don't think they would have allowed it even if it had no bible verse on it. You can't just go place something in a public park without going through the proper venues. As someone else said the metal could get hot and burn someone. The bench has A LOT of sharp edges and thin metal. That is the first thing I thought when I saw it on the news. Before the man in the interview mentioned the verse I though "oh they think it may be dangerous". Someone could fall easily and get hurt on it. The town and county have to be very careful about anything placed in public areas because of lawsuits. Whoever made this bench should have gotten approval. There is an easy solution to this issue...give the bench to the family and let them place it in their yard in a spot where the precious little boy loved to play.

smarta**, I must say, that was very well said. Our world has become a place that is so politically correct that they are terrified of offending anyone. I, for one, do not care who I offend as long as I believe in that of which I speak. People need to get over being so sensitive and ,as you said, put their big girl panties on. Whether this was done with or without permission, everyone at the town knows the family and could have handled the situation with more compassion. PERIOD.

Since the park is government property and apparently off-limits, an alternative would be to place the bench on the grounds of the family's church. It would make sense to place a bench with scripture on church property and there would be no argument about the legality. Seems like a good compromise.

Good for the town of Elkin. If this was allowed to take place the park would be littered with this type of stuff.

It is national now. Have a friend in AZ who saw it on his local news. He said there was a 2-3 minute story on it.

Oh, and earlier today this story was on the main page of Fox News, not sure if it just pinged off my location or not but it looks like it made national news. Sorry Elkin, but the publicity is going to suck.

OK, so everybody has opinion on this so here is one from atheist. Put the bench back and let it be a memorial to the lost child. So what they didn't get it approved, that is just someone using that to cover their *** if there is a lawsuit. So what, it has a bible verse, big deal. There is a christmas tree in my den, and my wife and I are atheist. We, and I mean the **** country, need to stop walking on egg shells, afraid that we will piss someone off, or hurt their little feelings.
Its a bench, a place to sit, actually a very nice seat at that. Quit making a big freaking deal out of every little thing. The Town of Elkin needs to put their big girl panties on and get on with it.
This child lost out on growing up, he will miss his first love, his first car, his first job, if this was an 80 year old man, it would be sad but not tragic. Quit being a bunch of politically correct ****s.
